Osteo Arthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis or wear-and-tear arthritis, can occur in any age. But is mostly observed in older people. Unlike other arthritis, it has nothing to do with the immune system or uric acid levels.
Any joint is a place where two or more bones come together. The ends of these bones are encapsulated by a protective tissue called cartilage. With time and with a diet of unbalanced nutrition, the cartilage gradually weakens and breaks down, causing the bones to rub against each other. This condition will give rise to severe pain while walking or any kind of muscle movement, with stiffness also associated in some cases. This condition is known as Osteo Arthritis.
Cartilage is rubbery and flexible in nature. It protects the bones joints and enables them to move easily against each other. When cartilage is damaged with age , the bone becomes dry and rough causing their surface to become pitted. This can cause pain and irritation at the joint. Cartilage doesn’t contain any blood vessels so they can’t repair themselves.
When cartilage wears away completely, the cushioning it provides disappears, leading the bones to come in contact with each other. This causes intense pain and other symptoms associated with OA. It also happens when the body is not able to repair joint tissue in the usual way.
Other causes of joint damage include past injury, such as:
1. Torn cartilage
2. Dislocated joints
3. Ligament injuries
4. Injury/ overuse
1. Pain in Joints
2. Tenderness (discomfort when pressing on the area with your fingers)
5. Loss of flexibility
6. Grating sensation
7. Bone spurs
8. Loss of muscle bulk
9. The affected joints are larger than usual
